Annette Elizabeth Smith

Richmond, Virginia

ANNETTE ELIZABETH SMITH, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend. After a long illness, God called Annette home. She passed peacefully on December 5, surrounded by her loving family.
Annette was born in Richmond, Virginia on October 11, 1959 to Mary E. Anderson and the late Norman Anderson. Annette grew up on Southside and was graduated from George Wythe High School (GW) in 1977. She participated in a work study program while attending GW that introduced her to banking. Upon graduation, she decided to explore other options and attended ICC, where she earned a CNA degree. She returned to banking, working for Crestar and its various iterations, until switching to Capital One to become an underwriter. There, she steadily progressed until chronic illnesses forced her to stop working in 2017.
Annette Joined the Second Baptist Church at an early age and participated in numerous children and adult ministries, including Sunday School, Junior Ushers, K-R Singers and Girl Scouts. She later became a Girl Scout Leader and worked with the children’s church. A faithful member of the Women’s Choir, she also served with the Kitchen Committee and assisted with the Angels of Praise.
Annette was an avid board and card game player and shared that passion with family and friends for fun family events. She enjoyed all kinds of arts and crafts -- making jewelry, floral arrangements, and corsages—crocheting. A puzzle board was always set up where she or others could sit and add a few pieces. A member of the RVA Readers Book Club since 2015, Annette had a real passion for reading, which started when she was young and continued into adulthood. Frequently described as a “Shopper Par Excellence,” she loved to shop and always discovered exceptional gifts at incredible bargains.
Annette is survived by her husband of 38 years, Carl Lee Smith; daughters: Carla Yvette Johnson (Clarence); Yolanda Bernice Smith (Ashley); Sydney Michelle Smith; grandsons: Nathan Rashad Smith; Clarence Michael Johnson IV; granddaughter: Keira Lee Johnson; great grandson, Nathan Rashad Smith, Jr.; mother, Mary Elizabeth Anderson: sisters, Linda D.
