Elder Eugene A. Mason, Jr. was an upstanding pillar in the community whose life was full of giving, sharing and supporting others. He lovingly cared for his family, served God and supported his church and community with dedication, integrity, and zeal. He passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2019.
Elder Mason was a native of Richmond, Va. born to parents, Eugene A. Mason Sr. and Elizabeth Mason, on June 23, 1941. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University and J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College with a concentration in business. As owner of Nosam Contracting and Services, he was an entrepreneur specializing in Home Improvement Construction Management. He was married for 57 years to the love of his life, the late Vivian Conway Mason. In her honor, he worked tirelessly to establish the Vivian Conway Mason Scholarship Fund for Virginia Commonwealth University to provide scholarships for underprivileged high school graduates.
Elder Mason served the Lord with all of his heart. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where he served in several capacities until he joined United Nations Church International where he served as a faithful Elder and worked to develop mentoring programs to support the youth. He also supported church initiatives with a desire to spread the love of Christ.
He believed in serving and giving back to his community and was affiliated with the Metropolitan Business League, the Richmond Urban league, The Boys Club of Richmond, The National Kidney Foundation, and served as Vice President of the Richmond Branch of the NAACP. In addition, he was Chairman of the Richmond Afro Community Advisory Board, Chairman of the Education Committee, and served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Richmond Public Library. Elder Mason also served on the Richmond Democratic committee and was Treasurer for the Richmond Crusade of Voters. As City Councilman, he served the ninth district establishing needed services in the area and supported programs in elementary schools that promoted self-esteem, positive role modeling and academic excellence.
Elder Mason leaves to cherish his memory: two (2) children, Yevette (Shawn) Hawley, Richmond, Va., and Eugene A. Mason III (Iva), Apex, NC, five (5) grandchildren, four (4) great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and a host of relatives and friends. He loved all of his family so very much. Eugene made an impressionable mark for the Lord in his family, in his church and in his community, which is his legacy.
