Eugene A. Sledge Jr

–

Richmond, Virginia

Eugene A. Sledge, Jr., was born on June 28, 1936, to the late Eugene and Martha Sledge. He peacefully entered eternal rest on October 22, 2025, after a life filled with faith, service, and dedication to family and community.

A proud graduate of the Armstrong High School Class of 1953, Eugene went on to further his education at Virginia State University, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. Eugene was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

A lifetime member of First Baptist Church South Richmond, Eugene served for many years as an usher. His warm smile, humble spirit, and welcoming presence touched everyone who entered the church doors. Professionally, Eugene dedicated over 30 years to the Richmond public school system, retiring after a long and fulfilling career as a school administrator. His passion for education and his commitment to helping
others reflected his deep belief in the power of learning and service.

Outside of work, Eugene enjoyed life’s many pleasures. He loved watching movies, traveling, and reading— especially newspapers and biographies. A lifelong car
enthusiast, he delighted in keeping up with the latest models and sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Martha Sledge; sister, Addie Wood; and son, Byron Sledge (Hastings). Mr. Sledge leaves behind to cherish his memory: his beloved wife of 51 years Linda B. Sledge; one sister Lilian V. Adams of Oceanside California; three children, Talbert Sledge (Hastings), Thaddeus Sledge (Mikerline), and Margert Sledge; two grandchildren, Imari Sledge (Devin) and Julian Sledge; devoted in-laws, Vincent and Frances Epp; devoted niece, Patrice Thompson (Tim); and a host of other relatives and friends.

Eugene’s life was marked by faith, humility, and service. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
