Richmond, Virginia
On Sunday, November 16th, 2025, our beloved mother and matriarch, Floyd Elizabeth Mitchell—affectionately known as “Flo”—a pillar of strength whose love held our family together, went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by those who loved her dearly. Her life was a testament to endurance, generosity, faith, and the extraordinary power of a mother’s heart. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to guide and inspire us.
Floyd, a woman of deep faith and dedication, was born on February 10, 1936, in Camden, South Carolina, to the late Sallie and Jessie Feggins Sr. She received her education in the Richmond Public Schools system. On May 18, 1962, she married the late Albert Mitchell Sr., who preceded her in death on October 16th, 1967.
A devoted member of Beulah Baptist Church, Floyd actively participated in various ministries and was known for giving her heart fully in all that she did. She was multitalented, possessing a diverse skill set that included accounting, cosmetology, and cooking. She was known for her hospitality and her passion for preparing flavorsome, mouthwatering, and delectable dishes to share with family, friends, her community, and her church family. Floyd’s cooking brought people together, filled hearts as much as it filled plates, and made everyone feel at home. As the head cook for Sugar & Spice and Terry’s Restaurant on Richmond’s Southside, customers were blessed not just by her food, but by the care and kindness she blended into every dish. Her skill was unmatched, her love is unforgettable, and her memory will live on through every life she touched.
Flo will forever be remembered for her unforgettable sense of humor and her infectious laughter that could brighten any room. She had a gift for blending wisdom with wit, and her sayings still echo lovingly in our hearts. Especially when someone was running late, she’d chuckle and say, “They must be coming by horseback.” Quite the comedian in her own right.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert Mitchell Sr.; brothers, Cliven, Jessie Jr. and Daniel (Roy); sisters, Luella Thompson and Pearline Fleming; son-in-law, Clarence Powell and companion of many years, John Clyde Bullock.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children: Leroy (Fran) Doe of Yorktown; Gail B. Powell of Columbus, GA; Albert Mitchell Jr. (Kim) of Chester, VA; and Anita Singh of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by her loving siblings: Wilhelmina James of Newport News, VA; and Linwood Feggins (Theresa) of Fayetteville, NC.
She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Lakeisha Mitchell-Adams (Michael) of Glen Allen, VA; Nakia Doe of Henrico, VA; Arnetra Mitchell of Henrico, VA; Albert Mitchell III of Fort Washington, MD; Cory Mitchell of Richmond, VA; Lisa Howard (Wendell) of Dale City, VA; Leroy Doe of Baltimore, MD; and Brittany Doe of Baltimore, MD; as well as several great-grandchildren, bonus-grandchildren and a host of other close relatives and friends.
She will also be lovingly remembered by her devoted family and friends—Delores Winston, Carrie Dunson, and Rosemary Lofton—along with her beloved grand-dogs: Special, Gigi, and Jackson.
Her Legacy
Flo’s legacy is not measured merely in years, but in the love she poured into others, the wisdom she shared, and the strength she embodied. She was a warrior in spirit—unyielding in her faith, steadfast in her devotion to family, and courageous in the face of life’s hardest battles. She taught us that strength is not loud—it is steady, faithful, and rooted in purpose. Even in her final moments, she fought with grace, dignity, and unwavering faith, demonstrating the very resilience that defined her life.
She didn’t just raise a family—she built a foundation of love, strength, and togetherness that will continue for generations. Her presence shaped us, her prayers covered us, and her love will forever surround us. Because of her, we know what faith looks like. We know what compassion feels like. We know what true strength is.
Her voice may be still, but her life continues to speak—through every lesson she taught, every life she touched, and every heart that carries her memory forward.
