Richmond, VA
Grace V. (Lewis) White was born on November 4, 1930 to Cammie Dabney and Frank Lewis. She was the ninth of ten children to be born out of this union and is the last of the Lewis Tribe to depart this earthly life; they are now all reunited and celebrating in heaven.
Grace was a woman of strong faith. She accepted Christ and was baptized at Fifth Street Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. She continued her walk with Christ as an adult at Bethlehem Baptist Church (Church Hill, Richmond). As a seasoned and devoted Christian, she joined Koinonia Christian Church where she actively served until The Lord called her home. While at Koinonia Christian Church, she was affectionately known as The Mother of the Church.
After graduating from Armstrong High School, Grace entered into the workforce as a seamstress at Spitzer Cleaners. Sewing was one of the many ways Grace showed love to her family, friends, and community. When her children were school aged, you could find her at her sewing machine adding last minute embellishments to her daughters' Easter dresses. She was often up into the wee hours of the morning making sure all the finished details were just right. This type of selfless love for others wasn't just evident in her relationship with her children; rather Grace displayed this level of care and love for everyone she knew.
After her days at the cleaners, Grace went on to work at Virginia Power (now Dominion Energy). She would work there until she retired. Once retired, she started a full time job as Supreme Grandmother to her grandchildren! All of her grandchildren have stories about their weekend visits at Grandma's house. They typically all go the same way; grandma made you laugh, she told the best stories, she'd let you stay up late and snack with her, but not too late because you had to wake up in time for church on Sunday morning. When not with her grandchildren, a few of her favorite self care activities included traveling to see plays, shopping, and walking.
Gracie, as she was known by her close family and friends, modeled the principle of family through the way she lived. Grace would call to check on her family and friends daily and would send birthday cards with handwritten messages to all of her family members.
She was a true joy to know and love. Her family and friends will forever honor and cherish her life and legacy.
