Gurnie Newsome

Gurnie was born in 1912 to the late Amos and Frances Jordon Newsome of Lucama, NC.

He was educated in the Wilson County School System. He left North Carolina when he was 17 years old for Richmond, VA. There, he gained employment as a house painter. His first marriage produced a son (Timothy), who preceded him in death.

Gurnie was married later in life to Minnie Brown Newsome. They celebrated over 25 years of a blissful union. He called her his "Little Girl." She also preceded him in death.

Gurnie was a dedicated and loyal member of the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church of Richmond and served as an usher for many years.
On April 20, 2016 at 3PM at Lexington Court Healthcare in Richmond, VA, he went home to be with the Lord!

Gurnie is preceded in death by 3 sisters, Lenetta Thompson, Alberta Ward and Beulah Sutton; 3 brothers, Willie, Robert and Cleveland Newsome.

He leaves to cherish his memory, one stepson, Theodore Brown and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and good friends.

Funeral service will be held at 12 Noon at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, 14 W Duvall St. Richmond, VA. Rev. Tyrone Nelson, Pastor. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Pilots Lane, Henrico, VA.
