Midlothian, Virginia
Linwood Sylvester Patterson Jr. was born on October 9, 1959, and was called to his eternal heavenly rest at the age of 66 on the morning of December 30, 2025, at The Laurels of Willow Creek in Midlothian, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Linwood S. Patterson Sr. and Annie Bell Wilkerson Patterson.
Linwood accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at First Baptist Church of South Richmond under the leadership of Rev. W.L Ransome. He attended Richmond Public Schools and graduated from George Wythe High School, Class of 1978. While at George Wythe, Linwood excelled in athletics, particularly track and field and football. A proud “Mighty Bulldog” wearing jersey number 71, he earned numerous honors, including All-Metro and All-State recognition in track, as well as High School All-American honors in football. He helped Wythe win the AAA Regional Championship in 1978. He was highly recruited by schools both locally and across the nation. Linwood remained an All-Star athlete throughout his high school years and carried his love of sports with him throughout his life as a loyal fan of the NFL’s Washington Commanders (formerly known as Redskins.)
Over the years, Linwood was employed by Circuit City, Westvaco, and Alcor Packaging Company, where many coworkers became lifelong friends and extended family.
Linwood was affectionately known by many names—“Junie” to some, “Big Lin,” “Wood,” and “Big Dog” to others—but his favorite titles were “Dad” and “Papa.” He cherished time spent talking and laughing with family and friends. His sense of style was unmatched, often seen in his tailor-made suits. He enjoyed grilling, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and traveling. Above all, he adored being a devoted father to his daughter Sierra, and a proud Papa to his grandchildren, Noah and Nadiah. He also took great pride in mentoring his young nephew, Harold “Trey” Mondrey III. Linwood’s infectious laugh could light up any room, and all who knew him felt the warmth of his kindness and his generous heart.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Sierra “Sie-Sie” Patterson of Newport News, Virginia; his beloved grandchildren, Noah and Nadiah; and Vicki Williams, with whom he shared many meaningful years and the joy of raising their daughter. He is also survived by his brother, Eric Patterson, and sister, LeAnder Patterson Mondrey; his uncle, Elwood Patterson Sr.; nephews: Andrew Townes and Harold “Trey” Mondrey III; nieces: Shawnte Adams, Kaitlyn Mondrey, Amber Patterson, and Erica Patterson; and great-nieces and nephews: Jayden Townes, Trinity Adams, Tyler Adams, Kameron Mondrey-Harris, Jaide Adams, and Kelvin Merriman III.
Also surviving are Terrance Duke Wynne of Newport News, Virginia, and Dee Williams of Norfolk, Virginia, who were part of his household during their childhood and remained close to him throughout his life. He is further survived by many dear friends, including Kevin Brandon, Samuel Graham, Adriene Mines, Rodriques Tony Taylor, Joe Brown, John Miles, and Wendell Johnson, as well as a host of cousins, extended family members, and friends.
Linwood is no longer burdened by pain or suffering; he is free from the troubles of this world and resting peacefully. Though he is gone from our sight, his love, laughter, and legacy will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
