Lyla Carrington Whitehead, 88, of Richmond, Virginia departed this life peacefully on Monday, May 23, 2022. She was the oldest child of the late Deacon Roy Lee Carrington and Otelia Johnson Carrington, formerly of Keysville, Virginia. At an early age, Lyla accepted Christ and became a member of Mount Ellis Baptist Church in Keysville, Virginia. As a teenager, she sang with the family gospel group which aired each Sunday morning on WFLO radio in Farmville, Virginia.\n\nAfter high school, Lyla married James Spencer. From that union one child, Gail Spencer Brown was born. In later years, Lyla met and married Bob Whitehead. From that union two children. Monica Faye Whitehead and Bobby Lee Whitehead were born. Lyla was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren.\n\nShe was a great cook, who enjoyed making delicious meals for her family and friends. Lyla was, at one time, employed as a cook by Virginia Union University. She retired from the St. Francis Nursing Home, in Richmond, Virginia, where she also worked as a cook.\n\nLyla led a quiet life and never complained. She was usually soft spoken and reserved. Though if you wanted to make her laugh hysterically and have fun, you could just turn on "Sanford & Son," "The Jeffersons," or "Good Times" and she would laugh as if it were her very first time seeing them and she probably had watched each episode 100 times. She enjoyed those sitcoms so much until she purchased the collections of each. She was also a big fan of "FamilyFeud."\n\nBecause of her good memory, Lyla was the unofficial historian of the family. Her memory was so keen that she could remember things that happened when she was only two years old! She was blessed with that strong memory and with that memory she blessed us with many stories. We might attribute the great memory she maintained, even in her golden years, to the fact that she loved to do crossword puzzles and word searches.\n\nLyla was preceded in death by her father and mother; one sister, Theresa C. Walkins, four brothers; Claude R. Carrington, Roy Lee Carrington Jr., James Murray Carrington, and Anthony Leon Carrington.\n\nShe leaves to cherish her life, and memories three children : Gail Spencer Brown; Bobby Lee Whitehead, and Monica Faye Whitehead; three granddaughters: Ariana Brown, Jade Whitehead, and Simone Whitehead ; three sisters: De Leva Ganelle Hall (Frank) Chesapeake, VA, Iliga C.Gregory, of Alexandria, VA, and Shirley Anne Carrington of Richmond, VA ; Two brothers, Harold L. Carrington (Jane) of Junction City, Kansas, and Perry W. Carrington (Alejia) of Farmville, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.\n\nFuneral service will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Mimms Funeral Home, 1827 Hull St. Interment Maury Cemetery.
