Madeline B.D. Martin Obituary (1938 - 2020)

Deacon Madeline Bassfield Doggett Martin quietly entered into eternal rest with her Heavenly Father at the age of eighty-one. Madeline, daughter of the late James Edward Bassfield, Sr. and Helen E. Pride Bassfield; born on October 14, 1938 in Richmond, Virginia. Madeline was baptized at an early age. She attended Richmond Public Schools; graduating from Armstrong High School in 1956. Madeline better known as "Mat" was married 21 years to the late Rayford Wendell Doggett , Sr. From this union was one daughter, Pamela Denise and three sons, Rayford Wendell, Jr., Marc Anthony and Stacye Gustavus Doggett. She referred to herself as a "Domestic Engineer". During this union she began to develop her love for camping and traveling. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church for over 18 years. She also served as a Deacon at the Greater Union Baptist Church in Chase City, VA. and served on the Missionary Ministry. She then married the late John Martin in 1983; gaining five children. This union lasted twenty-eight years. Madeline received a degree in Theology & Ministry from VUU - Union Presbyterian Seminary School of Richmond ,VA. She enjoyed her family and friends and loved RV camping, traveling around the USA and other countries. Madeline was a great supportive wife, dedicated mother, step-mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, loyal sister, protective aunt, and wonderful friend. We will grieve the loss of this earthly vessel. However, we will rejoice knowing she is in her resting place. Her job here is complete. Madeline fought a great fight, she is now at peace. Madeline leaves behind to treasure in her precious memories; a devoted son Rayford W. Doggett, Jr. of Richmond, VA.; and daughter Pamela Washington (Willie) of Mechanicsville, VA.; son Marc A. Doggett (Talveta) and son Stacye G. Doggett (Gail) both of Chesterfield, VA.; two step-sons; John M. Martin, Jr. of Chase City, VA. and David L. Martin (Phyllis) of East Orange, NJ; two step-daughters Brenda G. Coleman of Clarksville, VA. and Wanda D. Martin of Atlanta, GA.; thirteen grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Madeline also leaves one sister Joyce B. Davis, three brothers- James E. Bassfield, Jr. (Jane), Jerome Bassfield, Sr., Ronald L. Bassfield; one uncle Edward Shearn (Loretta) all from Richmond, VA.; eight sisters-n-law - Loretta Colbert and Betty Doggett of Richmond, VA., Bessie Hector, Rebecca Bacon and Isabelle Bacon all of Chase City, VA. and Annie Russell of Plainfield, NJ, Carolyn R. Martin of Chase City, VA. and Elsie Weir of Detroit, MI.; one aunt-n-law - Susie White of Chase City, VA.; two brothers-in-law, Ellis Bacon of Chase City, VA; Troy Ruff (Vickie) of Christiansburg, VA.; several nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews and host of other relatives and friends.
