Ms. Mary "Gertie" Johnson, a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, departed this life on July 2, 2025 at the age of 75. Born on January 24, 1950, in Chesterfield, Virginia, Gertie was the daughter of the late Walter and Mildred Johnson. She was one of ten children, all of whom preceded her in death, including her beloved fiancé, Mark.
Mary received her education in the Chesterfield County Public Schools. From a young age, she embraced her faith, accepting Christ and becoming a member of Beulah Baptist Church. Later, she joined United Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until her health declined.
Affectionately known to all as "Gertie," Mary was a loving, caring, and friendly soul with an infectious smile that could brighten even the cloudiest day. She had a zest for life and loved getting dressed up and going out, especially to church. Gertie found joy in simple pleasures: talking on the phone, watching her "daytime stories" (with The Young and the Restless being a particular favorite), and enjoying Madea movies. A true fan, she loved the music of Michael Jackson. Gertie also had a special fondness for fried chicken, potato salad, and her ultimate favorite — strawberry cheesecake.
In her later years, Gertie found a loving home at A&J Residential Services, where she was showered with immense care and affection. She was truly "spoiled" with love, and the staff at A&J became an extension of her family. Her birthdays were celebrated with grand parties, where she was dressed like a queen, a testament to how she was cherished every day. It was at A&J Residential Services that she met and fell in love with her late fiancé, Mark.
Mary is survived by her three sisters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends. She will be especially missed by her two devoted
nieces, Leticia Mosby and Karen Clarke, and her devoted nurses and extended family at A&J Residential Services.
