SFC RET Sherman Hurrye, Sr.
SON, BROTHER, VETERAN, FATHER & DEVOTED VOLUNTEER
On Thursday morning, December 18, 2025, our Heavenly Father called home our beloved SFC RET Sherman Hurrye, Sr., at the age of 72. Born on October 27, 1953, in Monroeville, Alabama, he was the son of the late Otha Hurrye and Lovie C. Hurrye, Sr. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Hurrye and Opra “Jeannie” Hurrye.
Sherman was a proud graduate of the Union High School Class of 1972 in Monroeville, Alabama. In 1972, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army, beginning a distinguished 20 year military career marked by honor, discipline, and unwavering dedication. His service included overseas tours in Honduras, Germany, and Grenada, and he earned numerous medals, ribbons, and commendations—too many to list—but among them the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), National Defense Service Medal (with 1 Bronze Star), and the Army Commendation Medal. He also earned his Airborne Wings at Fort Benning.
As a Logistics NCO Instructor, Sherman’s leadership, professionalism, and steady guidance shaped the careers of countless soldiers. He retired honorably from the United States Army in 1993, carrying with him deep pride in the work he accomplished and the lives he touched. Following his military retirement, Sherman continued his life of service as a Logistics Supervisor in Material Management at the VCU ENT/EYE Clinic, and later as a Logistics Instructor at Fort Lee Military Base.
Sherman accepted Jesus Christ at an early age, and his faith remained the foundation of his life. As a devoted member of First Baptist Church Centralia in Chesterfield, Virginia, he found joy in fellowship and lived out his faith through compassion, encouragement, and generosity. He served faithfully in the Usher Ministry, Greeter Ministry, Sons of Success Ministry, Brotherhood Ministry (Camp Courage), and worked closely with the Young Men Ushers. He also organized and carried out the church’s annual Veterans Day Program, a role he fulfilled with honor and humility.
Sherman was a dedicated volunteer with the Create Center Arts and Technology Environment, Inc. at First Baptist Church (Centralia), where he became a beloved mentor to the children—especially the boys—who affectionately called him “Mr. Sherman” or the “Cookie Man.” He frequently engaged them in small projects, accompanied the staff on trips; and they will dearly miss their fun and caring friend.
He was often seen alongside the late Dr. Wilson Shannon, Pastor of First Baptist Church (Centralia), delivering vegetables, visiting the sick and shut in; or working on projects together. On second Sundays, he drove the church van to pick up seniors and bring them to worship. He coordinated event setups for the various ministries. Whenever someone asked for assistance, his response was simple and sincere: “Don’t worry, I gotcha.”
In November 1982, Sherman became a proud Mason of Abram Lodge #10 in Petersburg, Virginia. He also supported and participated in the VFW and the American Legion, continuing his lifelong commitment to veterans and community service.
Above all, Sherman will be remembered as a loving and devoted family man. He treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and extended family. His gentle spirit, warm smile, and steady presence brought comfort and joy to all who knew him. And he never missed a chance to cheer for his beloved Dallas Cowboys.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving sons, Broderick Hurrye (Elizabeth) and Sherman Hurrye, Jr., both of Chester, Virginia; his daughter, Tasha Hurrye of Monroeville, Alabama; his grandchildren, Salliea, Sarenity, Kyian, Ryan, Za’Nova, and Kez; and his great granddaughter, London. He is also survived by his brother, Terry Hurry (Tara) of Wilmington, North Carolina; his sisters, Earlene Fountain and Evelyn Jerkins, both of Monroeville, Alabama; his devoted nephew, Demetrius Hurry; his devoted niece, Edith McMillian (Anthony); his close and dear friend, Theresa Steed; his close friends, James Coleman & (SGM RET) Dewey L Blake Jr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, his First Baptist Church family, and his neighbor, Raymond Tucker.
SFC RET Sherman Hurrye, Sr. lived a life of purpose, service, and love. His legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
