Thelma Yvonne Hickmon Carter Obituary (1939 - 2014)

Carter THELMA YVONNE HICKMON CARTER affectionately known as Mother, Nana, and Aunt Bonnie departed this life at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital (Rockville, MD), Saturday, April 26, 2014. She has gone home to be with her loving and caring father, Mr. Floyd Oscar Hickmon, II and her dear great-aunt, Mrs. Mattie McKenzie Brooks. Yvonne was born in New York, NY on May 10, 1939. She and her family moved to Richmond in 1946 and resided in their family home at 1701 Decatur Street, Manchester, Richmond. She was baptized in and became a member of First Baptist Church, South Richmond at an early age. Yvonne was educated in Richmond Public Schools, graduating from Blackwell Elementary School and Armstrong High School. She attended Virginia Union University. She married Junius Leon Carter, Sr. in 1960 and together they had two children. Yvonne was a member of the Elizabeth Harris Chapter #86 Order of the Eastern Starr. Yvonne was retired from the City of Richmond, Department of Social Services after 30 years of service. Yvonne loved researching her family genealogy and history and was always eager to share her finding with her family. She was an active member of the Virginia Historical Society and the Chesterfield Historical Society. She enjoyed politics, history, traveling, reading, shepherding her grandchildren through life and preparing healthy and abundant meals for numerous family gatherings. Yvonne was loved by ALL who knew her. She exuded unconditional love in her heart toward everyone as only she could. She will always be remembered for her kindness, warmth, integrity and dignity...always standing on the side of what was right, true and good. Yvonne is survived by her mother, Mrs. Thelma Onelia Arrington Hickmon of Richmond, VA, two loving and eternally devoted children, Mr. Jay Carter and his wife Robin of Woodbridge, VA; Mrs. Monika Carter Laws and her husband Charles of Gaithersburg, MD; five grandchildren, Rebecca Nicole Carter, Yarbrough "Yarby" Charles Laws III , Samantha Arrington Carter, Kayla Yvonne Laws and Maxwell Floyd Carter; two eternally devoted first cousins, Mrs. Rachel Arrington Wells, her husband Keith, and their two children Ashley and Khristopher Wells of Powhatan, VA and Ms. Deborah E. Arrington of Glen Allen, VA; one uncle, Mr. Wilbur Arrington and his wife Terry of Portsmouth, VA; one dear brother Mr. Floyd Oscar Hickmon III and his wife Helen of Los Angeles, CA; two sisters Carolyn Allen and Gayle Kight; two devoted friends and neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest and Ann Edwards of Richmond, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral Services will be held at First Baptist Church South Richmond on Tuesday, May 6, at 12:00 p.m. Interment Maury Cemetery
