Thomas Edward Smith transitioned peacefully on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at Sheltering in Arms Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Virginia. He was born in Richmond, Virginia on May 29, 1941, to the late Glennis Ballard and the late Ervin Keys.\n\n\n\nThomas "Tommy" attended Richmond Public Schools. He graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School in 1961. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Antioch University.\n\n\n\nThomas grew up attending Morningstar Baptist Church, and years later attended Star Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia .\n\n\n\nThomas worked at Westvaco, then as a Business Manager for Local #670. He worked as a Union Organizer for 25 years at Graphic Communication International Union (GCIU) in Washington, DC.\n\n\n\nThomas married Betsy Mallory Smith on July 2, 1966. They were married for 56 years. To this union, they had two children, N'Jeri and Jawanza.\n\n\n\nThomas leaves to cherish his memory a loving , devoted, caregiver wife , Betsy M. Smith : two children, N'Jeri Johnson (Tremayne Sr.) , Jawanza Smith: four grandchildren , Emonie Smith, Tremayne Johnson, Jr.(Kayla), Jalein Jenkins-Johnson, Navonte` Johnson: two sisters, Judy Bullock (Nathaniel ) and Viola Heaven: brother -in-law, George E. Hicks: a devoted cousin, Mary Jefferson : a host of cousins, nieces , nephews and friends.\n\n\n\nViewing will be Tuesday, August 30, 2022 at 6 pm. at Mimms Funeral Home.\n\nFuneral will be Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at 1 pm at Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church, 1408 West Leigh Street, Richmond, Virginia.
