On March 15, 2018, God called to eternal rest a loving, devoted, husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, Mr. William Clifton Turner, son of the late John Roy and Freddie Darden Turner. William, affectionately known as "Cliff," was born in Norfolk, VA, on May 5, 1929 to the late Alline Turner and William T. Claude. He was raised in Southampton County, in the town of Courtland, VA, formerly known as Jerusalem.\n\nClifton accepted Christ at a young age and joined Bryant Baptist Church in Capron, VA, where he sang in the choir until he gained his General Education Diploma and joined the U. S. Army. Clifton served two years, became a Private 1st Class, and left to rejoin the civilian world. He went to work as a cook and waiter on the Old Bay Line Cruise Ship from Norfolk to Baltimore, which led to his meeting the love of his life, Margaret Butts. Clifton married Margaret on August 27, 1955, and together, they raised a son who preceded him in death, SSG James H. Brooks, better known as Jimmy.\n\nClifton later worked as a lab technician for Sampson Coatings, a manufacturer of specialty and performance paints and protective coatings on Hull St. in Richmond; he retired after 27 years of service there.\n\nClifton's favorite past-times were fishing and music. He was a member of the Sport Anglers Club of Richmond. Clifton also loved listening to all kinds of music, especially gospel and jazz. His favorite passages of scripture were the 23rd Psalm and The Lord's Prayer. He enjoyed visiting and spending time with family and friends.\n\nTo cherish Clifton's wonderful memory, he leaves a wife of 62 years, Margaret L. Turner, one granddaughter, Nadine Sommer, and four great-grandchildren, Taleeq, Iman, Iliana & Nikko, Sommer all of Augsburg, West Germany.\n\nIn addition, Clifton also leaves six sisters, one brother, five sisters-in-law, and five brothers-in-law, Rebbie Warren (Samuel), Portsmouth, VA, Bessie Murphy, Santa Barbara, CA, Ida McKinney (Walter), W. Hartford, CT, Dorothy Williams (John), Bridgeport, CT, Jean Butler (Bernard), Bloomfield, CT, Evonia Manson, New Britain, CT, David Turner (Freida), Windsor, CT, Dorothy Butts, Brooklyn, NY, Geraldine Butts, Chesapeake, VA, Janice Turner Newport News, VA, and Joshua & Naomi Tucker, Norfolk, VA. Clifton was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother, and one brother-in-law: Shirley Williams (Samuel), Cathalee Johnson, and Roy Turner.\n\nAlso, to celebrate Clifton's life are three special individuals who were like his own children, Greta Trent, Timothy Jones, and Angelo Jordan. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends will cherish the wonderful memory of "Cliff," this wonderful soul who made the world a better place with wisdom, love, and kindness.\n\n Funeral service will be held on Friday March 23, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Second Baptist Church, 3300 Broad Rock Blvd. Rev. Ralph Hodge, Pastor, Officiating. Interment Dale Memorial Park.
